It's pretty common for male students to tell me that their fathers don't really talk to them. Their mothers communicate their father's wishes. There are plenty of American tv shows and movies that could make a Korean guy jealous. I think that the Courtship of Eddie's Father might be one.
One student I had said he only got to have conversations with his father when he was drunk. They drank together, got drunk, had conversations. Interestingly, this student is an alcoholic.
