What if I die or something?

Sorry for the serious posts...I'm really under the weather and I don't know what's wrong with me and because I'm old now I'm thinking the worst, what if I die of some disease? Or what if I just die? I think the kids would be ok, maybe I don't know. Man I feel yucky and probably won't blog all weekend.

CNN Beef

CNN is making it a GIVEN that people are going to want to avoid made in China products. They just make it a given.

The real stories are being reported on BBC World and Asia news and the Australian news network. It's a very interesting story about some goings on in China and the fact that some feel they should protect themselves from China as far as trade and money goes.

It's a bit hard for me to articulate this because I might sound like China is perfect, which it's not and I don't care one way or another...my beef is with the news coverage. It's so weird. Just cover the story, don't tell me what to think and create a scare. CNN is actually attempting to create a scare or the appearance of one. The other news outlets are covering China stuff extensively, but CNN is like, "How to avoid Chinese products...oh look it's so hard."

The recent issue in China that was sad had to do with antibiotics, which aren't exported to the US...that's totally an internal issue. There's a pet food crisis. The pet food crisis affected people over seas. Anyway, there's interesting stuff going on...but CNN is just pathetic.

The international version of CNN is better than the US version, but still...

By the way, I should mention that it's very common for countries to go back and forth fighting over imports and exports and protecting their own businesses and whatnot. That's what this is about.

Take South Korea for an example. For years they have been broadcasting that US Beef is not safe. South Korean people were like 'hey, that's a convenient truth', we can stop the imports of US beef, and they did. Was there ever a real scare? My students ask me about mad cow disease sometimes, I'm like yeah, I'm not sure how many people have actually died from that. I didn't change my life at all, I know I was mad when Oprah got sued because she should be able to say whatever she likes. But other countries used that info to ban the import. It's politics. They recently lifted the ban, it was a hot South Korean political issue.

The latest CNN report about a woman who wrote a book detailing her trials of going without made in China for a whole year doesn't mention what her husband or she does for a living. I'd be interested to know.

I know the picture here implies the government controls CNN, but I like this picture. What's going on in this case is not control by government, but CNN supporting a certain ideology of the business community (not the lazzie-faire group).

Excuse me, but what?
The Bush administration promised that they were going to Iraq to fight "them over there". So people said, "How come Iraq? I thought Afghanistan..."
"Shhh" they said, "You don't love America."
"Mr. Bush, are you going after Osama Bin Laden?"
"Saddam Hussein is a bad guy."
"Yes, we knew that when you put him in his regime...any way...Osama.."
"You hate America. We are fighting them over there."

One day back in the Clinton administration, Bill bombed Afghanistan. Remember? Or maybe we don't remember because that was during zippergate. People said, oh, look wag the dog. Well, no Afghanistan was important zippergate was not.

He was bombing Osama Bin Laden's hideout and missed him. He had no support as the country was torn apart by Kenneth Starr's Whitewater rampage that ended in nothing useful whatsoever for anyone. Bill left office, and passed on the documents to Bush about what was up with Bad Boy Bin Laden. We know what happened next. Nothing, and then something...9/11

Now ITS NOT EVEN NEWS that the Taliban in Afghanistan continually kidnap and sometimes excecute people.
So HOW about fighting them OVER THERE?

Why are South Korean troops in Afghanistan? You think SOUTH KOREA has some beef with the Middle East? They're supporting US troops. I see in the news today that there is fighting going on there, and some Taliban have been taken out...and some NATO troops have gone down.

My question is, at the very least, why is this not a big news story in the US?
The US is the one that should be busting those hostages out or negotiating. I know that I don't fully understand the current Afghanistan situation, but I know that it's our beef (US) and others are supporting the cause. Shouldn't they be helped?

The 23

I'm waiting for info on the 23 South Korean hostages kept in Afghanistan right now. It's continually no news. I guess in this case, no news is good news.

I'm still feeling pretty under the weather, but I wanted to mention this really quickly. It has occurred to me while searching for images on the web of this situation that this MIGHT not be a big news story in the West. I can't find much on the net about it, and it's not even a headline when I log in to Yahoo news, I have to look around for it. If that's true it makes me sick and I already feel sick, in case I haven't mentioned that in the last 30 seconds.

There are photos of the group on the news, but I can't find any on the web.

Really Unwell

Some days I wish I was less like Seven of Nine, "You will not engage me in further irrelevant conversation!", sheesh girl, grow a heart. But I've been really unwell the last few days, and today I wish I was more like 7 of 9.

It looks like I need a doctor's visit and I'm scared, don't want to go. I might have to quit the job, if they don't get rid of me first. The issues are kind of yucky, I will say that my ear infection isn't helping the other things, and I might be deaf in my left ear now.

Oh well, we'll see. But there's been quite a few things going on in the news that I'd like to blog about, all I can do for now is apologize and say I'm feeling terrible, so I don't forsee an interesting blog entry soon. Sad face.

You Live In A Zoo...

Add this to the list of exotic creatures in my house.
We have lots of cockroaches. We have mice, lizards that scale the wallls, and we've had two frogs so far. Add scorpions, and some strange insect with huge pincers that looks like a scorpion, but is not a scorpion. Add spiders that are so big and strange you'd think they were laytex. I went into the kitchen yesterday and a little brown bat was hanging from the cabinet. My son was fascinated with it, and I have Jeff Corwin to thank for my son not being terrified.

That's all I can think of for now, I'm sure I've forgotten something. We sleep inside nets, I wouldn't dare sleep without a net. No way. I've already woken up several nights with a mouse running around my bed inside the net. Yikes, that's scary at night. Anyway, there it is. My students told me, "You live in Jew!" and that's exactly how they say it. Me:"What?" Them:"You live in Jew!"

If you say a Z like a J you are speaking Chinese, not English. Then we practice the Z sound, which is hard for them, as that sound is not in their language.

My son told me this morning with glee that there's a space correspondent for CNN names Miles O'Brien. You're kidding, right? Nope.
To cool people everywhere this is and will always be the real Miles O'Brien.
He's the space correspondent you need if you have to be transported somewhere, "Beam me up Miles!" I get a kick out of thinking that the CNN Miles might run into some dork that asks, "Is that your real name?" Uh...yeah...

We've been watching CNN like everyday for the past year, I'm not sure how we missed this one.

Say What?

Two days ago I woke up completely deaf in my left ear. Last night the pain was so much that I didn't sleep. This morning my helper came over and told our friends that live in the space in back of the house, and it turns out that the dad and the older sister of that family have the same thing. It's just nasal drainage that went down the wrong chute. So both these ladies got me some antibiotics and vics vapor rub. I sat over a steaming hot bowl of vics, and it felt great. Then I crashed out and had a comfortable sleep even though my ear still hurt. Ahh...

I had no way of contacting work, both my cell phones are inoperative and my numbers are stored in there also. I don't see why I should tell them anyway, they never tell me anything.

I've never had an earache or ear infection before in my life. While I was deciding if I would try to take the one hour trip to work to personally let them know that I was going home, my older son started barfing like mad. So that settled it for me, I wasn't leaving the house. My poor older guy, he's the glue that holds us together around here. It's so sad when he's sick. All three of us slept a large part of the day side by side on the floor (we always sleep on the floor local style).

Exmo stuff

I like reading exmormon blogs, but the best ones are written by athiests, and I ain't one of those by any stretch of the imagination, even though my dad is and educated me as such. The other exmo stuff is from the born-again popular religion types, and I'd rather associate with athiests any day. But they still irritate me sometimes.

Why do I like exmo stuff? That might be a complicated tale to tell. This is a picture of their magical underoos, by the way.

Well, I watched the Manly Sea Eagles (Yes, that's their name) beat the Wests Tigers, and the Tigers didn't take it so well. I've been watching rugby now and again, and it's pretty interesting. This game would have ceased to exist a long time ago were it not for the sportsmanship and decorum of the players, because the nature of this game involves a lot of contact between players. Almost every run ends in a group tackle, it's part of the game. Yet, the players wear no pads at all, just shorts and t-shirts. Some players choose to wear padded headgear, most do not.

I've been impressed with the rough, forceful, serious yet noble actions of these players. Without proper decorum this game would have evolved into the armor-wearing game of American football, or vanished altogether.

Now, let me talk about the Tigers. Those babies. They only had FOUR points during the game and lost with a total of FOUR points. Disgraceful. More disgraceful was their conduct during this time-honored game. Shame on them. They became extremely aggressive to the other team, but where did it get them? Nowhere, FOUR POINTS baby.

They need to grow up and join the rest of the MEN that play this game, or move to America and see if they can cut it with the ex-cons (and current-cons) of the NFL.

And one more thing...as far as all the sports I've seen goes. Rugby players are the hottest. That's all.

We really do, please don't take it the wrong way. I know there are some people out there who make fun of Indians and use APU for a joke, but that's just dumb people. WE LOVE APU! Did I say that already? He's actually portrayed as quite loveable in the Simpons, I like him more than Homer.

I saw a report on CNN last night about this, where some Indian 7-11 owners are a tad miffed about their store going "KWIK-E-MART" to promote the movie. Don't worry, okay? One guy said that APU's accent is totally unrealistic. Well, it's the Simpsons. They are yellow people. Marge has really tall blue hair.

I know this is all over the news by now, but did anyone else get misty eyed when they saw this, the making of a childhood dream come true?

Come on, every kid on the planet has wished for that. If this story came out when I was five I would have jumped up and down, "I knew it! I knew it! My mom said you can't do that, but you can!" Oh, wait, I'm doing that now.

Well this guy did it in true Mythbuster fashion. He needs to be hired by that show. He had all this gear and apparatus so that it probably wasn't much different than some hot air balloon ride as far as the science goes, but this has a cool factor of a gazillion.

It's been my dream to stand on the Great Wall Of China, but also to ride in a hot air balloon. SO amazing.

I Miss Morro Bay- Phobias?

I don't really miss the U.S., but I have fond memories of Morro Bay. I used to go up there all the time.

I absolutely love birds. Currently I have one student who is terrified of birds, we don't know why. Usually phobias come from a bad experience, but in her case she hasn't had one that she can remember. Last night on Animal Planet there was a show about phobias, and it was very interesting. People that have suffered from phobias for years sometimes decades can be cured in hours. Basicly, it's just exposure to the object that cures the person. I have two phobias that are a bit strange, and they can't be cured because I can't be exposed to the 'objects'. I just live with it.

This is a Yellow-rumped Warbler, love the name! How could someone be afraid of this?

News From Back Home:

San Luis Obispo County Roundup San Miguel Two San Miguel men pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of gang raping a 36-year-old woman, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Jose Eduardo Tejada Dionicio, 18, and Jose Ivan Ramos Lopez, 20, were arrested on suspicion of raping the woman June 21 in a car on 10th Street at 1:45 a.m., according to the Sheriff’s Department. The District Attorney’s Office said investigators are still looking for a third suspect in the alleged rape. Investigators are not disclosing the woman’s identity because she is the purported victim of a sex crime. The crime allegedly took place after the woman accepted a ride from the men and went with them to Paso Robles. Later, the men drove her to 10th Street in San Miguel, where they allegedly raped her inside the car and then dumped her out after she began fighting them. A pre-preliminary hearing in the case against Tejada Dionicio and Ramos Lopez is scheduled for July 23.

Dream Wedding

Bride attacks groom with stiletto shoe

LONDON - Scottish bride Teresa Brown's dream of a perfect wedding day probably did not include attacking the groom with her stiletto shoe and spending the weekend in a cell.

Police arrested the 33-year-old in the couple's hotel room in April while her wedding reception continued downstairs, prosecutor Alan Townsend said Tuesday at Aberdeen Sheriff Court. She spent the rest of her wedding weekend in a cell.

The distraught groom, Mark Allerton, 40, staggered to the front desk, clutching a bloody towel to his head, Townsend said. "He indicated that his wife had struck him over the head with a stiletto heel," the prosecutor said.

Brown told police she and her husband had "been accusing each other of different things," the prosecutor said, without going into details. Brown said she hit him on the head because he had taken a hold of her, he added.

Never Heard of It

My students have no idea that most of the world calls this "The Great Wall". In Korean they call it something that translates to million mile castle. The word mile there literally translates to something like unit, but when they speak English, it sounds good to say 'million mile'...even though most everywhere in the world, miles are not used as a unit of measure. Interesting.

When my students ask me what this is called in English, it very often to degenerates to a "Who's on First" skit. "What do you call that?" "The Great Wall"

"Yes, what do you call that in English?"
"The Great Wall of China."
"Yes, what is the English word?"
"That's what we say, it's called the Great Wall of China."
"How do you say it in English?"
By this time the class is separated in to two teams. One side has started to understand and is now on my side trying to give an explanation. The Korean starts flying. If they are successful convincing the others that this is indeed what it's called:

"Oh! That's the name? The Greatest..."
"No! The Great Wall."
"Just The Great Wall"
"Yes, The Great Wall of China"
"Oh! So simple!"

The next part of class consists of students trying to convince me they have one in Korea. No, you don't. Yes! We do it's in North Korea. Ok you win. I'm sure it's just as big and wonderous and not just a "wall".

I find flags to be really tacky, this one I didn't mind so much. Just ignore the holiday slogan. Yeah it took me awhile to notice that. Hey, is that a big rock in the background? Maybe this is a local picture from the Central Coast. Oh, no that's probably one of my friend's SONS. That always happens. Actually, once I was driving and this guy next to me was giving me the whatever-you-call-it I don't know, the once-over trying to flirt with me, and then he realized it was me, I knew that kid for years and know his family. Ha ha. That was yucky. The look on his face was absolutely priceless. This guy's face, I can't even see but it doesn't seem to matter. Hey, isn't that illegal to do that to the flag? He should take that off right now.

Another Rain Post!

I know I post about Rain a lot, he could probably have his own label on my blog, but I heard a Rain song today and I loved it. I had really never heard him sing before, but I have a new student, Kate, and she let me hear him on her MP3. I really liked it. She said that I was listening to his first hit. She also said she's going to make me a cd. My students are pretty disgusted with my lack of technology, and probably my wardrobe, lack of make up, hairstyle, attitude...whatever. Anyway, I love Rain. Man, it's hard to find a picture of him where he doesn't look so young. Eeesh.

Eye See Your Point

HONG KONG (Reuters) - A Hong Kong woman who blinded her boyfriend in one eye in a fight six years ago has been jailed for jabbing a chopstick into his other eye, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Last November, Po Shiu-fong, 58, accused long-time boyfriend Kwok Wai-ming, 49, of having an affair, the South China Morning Post reported.During the row, Po stabbed a plastic chopstick into his left eye, which she had already blinded six years ago when she poked it with her finger.

"Po became hysterical when she saw the wound and mopped it with a towel. The pair then went to bed," the paper said."The next morning they had another argument in which she grabbed a chopstick and stabbed Kwok's right eye," it said.

Two days later, he sought medical treatment and filed a police report against Po, whom he had dated since 1993.The paper said he didn't report the attack six years ago, telling the court his silence was "a love sacrifice."

Kwok lost 10 to 20 percent vision in his right eye, the paper said.
Po was jailed for six months on Tuesday.
"If I forgive her, God would not forgive me," the paper quoted Kwok as saying. "No matter what, nothing could compensate for the loss of my eye."

Great Korean Movies

I have asked gazillions of South Korean students what their favorite Korean movie is and I get lots of different answers, but there are three movies that get mentioned again and again. Here are two of them. I thought of this post because I just saw Robin Williams on Larry King Live and he was talking about hanging out with Martin Scorsese and he launched into an impression of Martin telling people about good movies to see, and he mentioned a South Korean movie called Old Boy in he middle of his schtick. I got excited to hear the reference, because I know Old Boy!

I don't know exactly what the movie is about, but I guess a guy gets put in jail at a young age and then gets out later, the same mental age as when he went in. The students don't really exaplain movies very well, even the ones who speak English well.

Another movie that's supposed to blow me away is Peppermint Candy.


I don't know what this one is about, but the students really like it. It's supposed to be one of the best Korean movies made.

Ok, this is serious. This photo on the left is Jessica's boyfriend, the photo on the right is Brian. These two are demanding to know who I think is the most handsome guy. I am constantly being begged here for this type of information. Who is the best looking student? Ergh.

Exceptions

Usually I hate all people who are not in my religion and I can't wait until they die the gruesome horrible deaths they deserve, but I really like Mr. Rogers. Here's some things that you might not know:

During the controversy surrounding the introduction of the household VCR, Rogers was involved in supporting the manufacturers of VCRs in court. His 1979 testimony in the case Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc. noted that he did not object to home recording of his television programs, for instance, by families in order to watch together at a later time. Really Quickly

A clarification on illegal immigration.

Illegals come in all shapes and sizes for different reasons doing different things. I'm not really concerned about this issue, it's not a pet topic of mine.

The group that concerns me is migrant farm workers, but I think that nowadays most of these guys are properly documented. I'm not sure but I think that's the case. If so, then the subject of illegal immigration doesn't really appeal to me.

My hatred for greedy business practices superceeds any concern I would have for illegal aliens. Labor issues are close to my heart and illegals working because business owners are cheap greedy law breakers is not okay, bust those suckers!

As far as the new hotly debated legislation goes, a 5,000 dollar fine and all the red tape (including a trip home?) that these people have to go through doesn't sound like amnesty to me.

As far as hating Sean Hannity goes, I'll not apologize for that. He's an asshat.

Update: I talked to my bosses, and I feel a little better, but also a little depressed. I couldn't find a good picture for this post, so I used this angry face, but I wasn't really angry. It was a bit more serious than that. I hate being away from my kids. It's insult to injury when working for incompetent people.

I'm Watching You, Girl!

I really want to swear right now, and that's another thing the devil makes me feel like doing when I bump heads with him. I'm stunned . I just found out that one of my blog entries has been linked to by three websites one of which is HANNITY DOT COM.... Yeah, as in Sean Hannity, as in the devil's shoe shiner. That guy.

What did I do to deserve this? It's a post from March 2007 about the New Bedford Immigration Raid. I made some one dimensional conservative comment, and boom. Well, in this case, it looks like illegal immigrants actually were doing jobs that citizens could be doing. BUT not all illegal immigration can be painted with the same brush. It's a whole different chunk of cheese in California.

The thing that freaks me out is I have NO WAY of knowing when someone links to my blog, I found it on accident. It's not in my editing capabilities here to see that.

I make one little right-wing observation and the devil just can't sit still. I pay for everything I do, I swear. And just so none of you are mislead by popular religious non-sense, according to the Bible, the devil would look a lot more like this than the above photo. Look at him looking so perfect in this imperfect world (evil)! Smoking cigarettes (evil), having coffee with t, probably spying on me (possibly evil) in a dress I would LOVE to have (evil)...how can you doubt his real identity? [Dave, I know that with this particular criteria you could also qualify as the devil, but don't worry.]

Monday

Readers have come to expect a certain amount of unexpected delight from me, and this post should deliver. Today was definitely a Monday chock-full of everything that gives this day its reputation. So here's a graphic for you.

Last night I drank vinegar, and I know it's good for me, but I almost think I had the urge to drink it because I'm going a little fruit-loopy lately. Vinegar is good for digestion by the way, but I was craving it for some reason.

Today was a mess and I sailed through it, I think, with the help of the vinegar that I consumed last night. Let me dream. We have so many new students here today who are starting class tomorrow, it's chaotic. I did an unexpected training class for some new hires during my free period, but that was not before cleaning up floods, changing rooms, schedules, and eating way too much at lunch. Everytime my butt starts to look even kind of sexy, I eat something dumb.

Normally, I don't think about my appearence too much (and it's apparent), but I do tend to visualize my innards now and again, like the above photo. This is a strange all-over-the-place rambling post, but I just wanted to share the love.
